Our Moral Sense free essay sample

â€Å"It frequently happens that a man is all the more altruistically identified with a feline or canine than to any human being† - Thoreau. For quite a long time, we have thought of ourselves, not as warm blooded animals, however as people, a race that has advanced past that of our sister species. In any case, this line of reasoning has prompted the extension of basic character qualities into defects that have wrapped our whole species and now torments every one of us. These imperfections become obviously noticeable under the assessment of Mark Twain. In The Lowest Animal, Mark Twain investigates how human imperfections establish us as the least creatures. All through his exposition, Twain utilizes tests (huge numbers of flawed authenticity) and verifiable proof to negate the Darwanistic hypothesis that people advanced from creatures and to validate that creatures have in actuality slid from creatures. 4Now, holding individual and philosophical convictions aside, Twain’s utilization of apparently decisive proof holds a moving contention that the hypothesis of development is really turned around; and that even from Twain’s time to introduce we as a race have reverted considerably more to be viewed as a lower creature than the individuals of Twain’s time. We will compose a custom paper test on Our Moral Sense or on the other hand any comparable point explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page All people are defective; however some to a further extent than others. One of the most obvious of human imperfections is our tendency to consistently need more. We are ordinarily eager creatures as Mark Twain finds apparent by his assessment of human contrasted with creature activities. To demonstrate this point Twain describes the narrative of a chasing trip in which a gathering of men, for the diversion of an English Earl, â€Å"killed seventy-two of those [buffalo]; and ate some portion of one of them and left the seventy-one to rot† (Twain, 470). 4 This does just to demonstrate Twain’s point that people â€Å"wantonly crush what they have no utilization for† (Twain, 471) on the grounds that it is accessible and we are worried about the possibility that that on the off chance that we don't take it another person will. Similar outcomes introduced themselves when Twain tried the activities of the English Earl against that of a boa constrictor. The Earl unnecessarily slaughtered creatures with no goal of utilizing the remaining parts as opposed to the boa constrictor who, when taken off alone with seven youthful calves, murders just one to satisfy his yearning and represents no genuine danger to the rest of the calves. In addition to the fact that humans are covetous, Twain finds, yet people have stretched into a pit of narcissistic propensities. To test his hypothesis of human narrow-mindedness Twain investigates the activities of rich men contrasted with those of the creatures. While rich men show â€Å"a raging strive after additional, and [did] not scrupled to cheat the uninformed and the vulnerable out of their poor servings so as to somewhat pacify that appã ©tit† (Twain, 471), the creatures utilized in the investigation â€Å"made gatherings, however halted when they had accumulated a winter gracefully, and couldn't be convinced to add to it either genuinely or by chicane† (Twain, 471). This analysis portion just to demonstrate Twains hypothesis of descendent and invalidate the since a long time ago held hypothesis of advancement. Insatiability is just one of numerous imperfections that people have come to have and even great. Take war for instance, it is regularly brought about by nationalistic squabbles between one loyalist and another. Twain clarifies that Man is the main creature that enthusiastically takes part in open slaughter to ensure a land parcel, or a legendary symbol not really known to have existed. His analyses show that creatures don't â€Å"gathers his brethren about him and go forward without a second thought and with quiet heartbeat to eliminate his kind†(Twain,472) however men have worked for century’s to consummate that capacity. In addition, in doing this man turns into the main creature that â€Å"helpless individual of his nation claims it and drives him out of it or demolishes him† (Twain, 472). As Twain dives further, his examination presumes that creatures battle independently and that people are the main creatures that participate in â€Å"organized masses† (Twain, 472). In this, Twain demonstrates that people are the main creatures that bunch together to negligently pulverize each other with the likelihood that they themselves may likewise be devastated. Twain uncovers that war isn't humanities just issue concerning the individual and all through the entirety of history, individuals have been oppressed for holding various convictions and beliefs. This human blemish is never more obvious than is the distinctions of religion. Utilizing verifiable proof, Twain originates before strict human preference to â€Å"the first Richards time [when] he quiets down a large number of Jew families in a pinnacle and burns down it† (Twain, 472). This mass execution was performs over a strict clash rotating around a book that as far as anyone knows was composed toward the start of mankind. Creatures are not defenseless to such stupidity since they have no known religions and there for clearly settle on less inclination choices thanâ humans. As Twain closes his examinations, he surrenders that there is just one factor that caused the decadency of people. Twain uncovers that not at all like creatures, people are the main species with a â€Å"moral sense† (Twain). Besides, it is this â€Å"moral sense† that licenses people â€Å"the capacity to recognize great from insidious; and with it, the capacity to do evil† (Twain). Twain estimates that without this distress people â€Å"would ascend on the double to the degree of the Higher Animals† (Twain). By the by, as a result of it man includes a characteristic that â€Å"is clearly without vale to him† (Twain) that will keep on causing man plummet to an even lower creature as the ages pass. On account of the arrangement of this paper twain portion not straightforwardly, distinguish either a fundamental hero or foe. Rather, Twain lets the numerous subjects of his analyses assume the jobs of foe and hero, which cause the jobs to turn out to be exceptionally intricate. This strategy for portrayal likewise permit Twain to utilize his characters to demonstrate his postulation without letting their own idea make a predisposition on the point. Furthermore, Twain’s human characters all have an odd likeness. At the point when Twain portrays his characters, he depicts every one of them by their societal position or strict inclination yet not once portion he delineate one of them as being beneath privileged. Since, Twain never gives explanation behind this, one can just guess that he utilizes the social first class to set his theory and give proof that it isn't just the laborers and bums who submit demonstrations of shamelessness yet that even the best of us are blameworthy now and again. In the event that it has not gotten evident, as of now you will see that Twain utilizes male characters in his analyses. Albeit a solid supporter of women’s rights, for the length of his paper, Twain just tends to the nearness of the female sex twice and the multiple times the females are depicted as casualties on account of men. By Twain expressing that â€Å"in our day in England a man is fined ten shillings for pounding the life out of his mom almost with a seat, and another man is fined forty shillings for having four fowl eggs in his ownership without having the option to acceptably clarify how he got them†(Twain 472) it leaves a lot to be pondered about the spot of ladies in Twain’s hypothesis since he never completely portrays aâ female figure as imperfect and the two female models utilized are utilized uniquely to reinforce Twain’s contention that men are the descendents from creatures. This is case since Twain is inferring that as of now men felt that ladies were just equivalent to that of creatures and no better. This makes the peruser wonder if Twain is inferring that ladies are in reality not the decedents from creatures but rather that of another species out and out. Presently, this could simply be a conspicuous component of the time, however Twain once in a while utilizes a solid female character in his composing wanting to concentrate on male leads. Despite the fact that the component of male characters in Twain’s composing is like his different works, he despite everything keeps up his ordinary type of parody, Twain has deserted his typical casual style for a progressively formal norm. Dissimilar to what we read in The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin, Twain surrenders his standard utilization of lingo for a cutting edge type of scholarly astuteness. Twain likewise utilizes a profound practically philosophical understanding to illuminate his perusers while figuring out how to maintain a strategic distance from the utilization of predisposition or individual convictions to influence the reader’s suppositions apparent by the Twain remembers himself for the paper disassociates himself from being either creature or human. The subject of Twains article makes many blended feelings for his perusers. Not exclusively does the subject of development alone test numerous strict perspectives however Twain likewise attempts to invalidate a since a long time ago held hypothesis of human insight over that of creatures. The analyses Twain performed makes a disposition of doubt combined with an interior shock at Twain for having the dauntlessness to compose such â€Å"hypocrisy† about his own sort. People have for quite a long time slipped through the set of all animals and have ground to a halt at the base of the chain of importance. We have gotten known as the most reduced creature through activities that we ourselves regard unfeeling however we as humans’ submit them. The investigations did by Mark Twain have obviously demonstrated that is creatures have in reality become our bosses in all good and moral methods. Our ethical sense, a trademark that most would think about an ideals, has driven humankind down a way that has finished in the disfavor of people and the ascendency of an animal categories that have been are still idea to be underneath people. Be that as it may, there is as yet one inquiry that Twain failedâ to answer through his investigations. Can we as people ever vindicate ourselves according to our creature sisters and have the option to appropriately guarantee that people are by and by the higher creatures or are we to paris

Philosophy of Freedom

Theory of Freedom What is opportunity? Is it outright right? In the event that we pose this inquiry to individuals around us, we will get around a hundred unique answers, since everybody will comprehend this marvel in their own specific manner. Opportunity can be characterized beginning from various angles, as indicated by various societies, from various perspectives and even from various convictions. Everybody was brought into the world thoroughly free and every one of them must reserve the privilege to live unreservedly. In light of certain articles, we can see that out there individuals need to be free and autonomous from one another, yet is this idea conceivable and worthy by the general public? Opportunity is the option to do what we need, live where we need, eat what we need, realize what we need to realize, for instance we pick what religion we need to accept, without thinking about others decisions! Truly, I don't know whether this in of right truly exists since we were educated in a manner where we are permitted to pick, however toward the end somebody will carry out that responsibility (deciding) for us. So would we say we are truly free?! Is it accurate to say that we are following the meaning of Freedom? As I would like to think, opportunity is a nonappearance of weight and implementation from others, where individuals is allowed to do what laws and social traditions don't preclude. We can barely say that all social orders are free similarly. By and by, I accept that we, Human creatures are God animals. God is the person who made us and gave us the privilege to life. As indicated by the Bible, God began to make the sky and the earth, at that point the morning and the night where He permitted the presence of life, beginning from feathered creatures to all the creatures and till the end the making of the Man, called Adam. Since Adam was so alone, God chose to give him an organization, an accomplice. In light of this, God made a general public for Humans and with it, we were instructed to obey and adhere to rules. Would we be able to attempt to envision what the world may transform into if all of us could do whatever we wanted㠢â‚ ¬Ã¢ ¦ without any constraints and regard towards the standards and others? All things considered, how might we live uninhibitedly? From my perspective, we can live uninhibitedly by regarding others rights to live unreservedly as well, by contemplating others rights. At the end of the day, the principle thought behind the word opportunity is to be deferential and mindful to the general public. Opportunity is a significant thing to each individual on the grounds that as we had experience in the previous decades a great deal of discussions have begun bantering about this point. For instance, I might want to discuss the right to speak freely. I consider opportunity discourse is the most significant part when we attempt to perceive what the importance behind opportunity is. As we probably am aware, out there is many individuals that are sentenced in light of the fact that for their imaginative brain and even, some of them are covered on the grounds that the general public can't acknowledge their method of communicating their emotions. In my examination, somebody said that opportunity of articulation will never bring about antagonistic vibe among individuals in the event that they regard every others thoughts. As I referenced previously, opportunity isn't an outright right, and there are an excessive number of constraint on it. As a matter of first importance, the general public right including national security which is significant, security is the most significant thing in opportunity. Our opportunities ought to never cause to compromising our national security. I have expressed a portion of my feelings about opportunity, presently I might want to portray the word opportunity by a definition. As indicated by Wikipedia, opportunity is inborn to human and that he will battles as long as he lives to reestablish his intrinsic option to be free man, I like this definition particularly on the grounds that I think it is valid, our opportunities are settled by us, nobody can set it! Since God gave us opportunity for nothing, we should give a valiant effort to keep up and keep this right. I think the most mortifying approaches to rebuff a human, is to deny the person in question from opportunity, for instance when somebody goes to prison, that individual is deny from opportunity thus he is languishing. Opportunity isn't supreme, it must be constrained. We can't simply do what we like and state I am a liberated individual!. We can't murder, carry medicates or damage the laws and rules for opportunity, they ought to be regarded and I absolutely concur with this sentence the opportunity of anybody closes where the opportunity of another starts!. For me, each youth ought to be instructed to be free, planting in them the adoration for opportunity, yet they may be managed, it ought not be unbounded. Opportunity in teenagers state is significant for building a decent character and a steady character. Youngsters need to spend time with companions, do whatever they like, or don't care for, they need to encounter everything. In the event that they are given opportunity without any cutoff points, they may get lost, so guardians should mention to them what is correct or wrong, so there is no restriction or limitation. That is the reason guardians direction is extremely significant for our reality. Just opportunity with no direction will prompt a terrible activities and cause devastation in the general public. Opportunity is an express, a procedure of collaboration of people and gatherings with nature, when the general public is changing or an individual rolls out certain improvements so that there show up more chances of decision and acknowledgment of significant purposes and qualities. The most significant thing that we should think about is making the most of our opportunity without hurting our security. For end, opportunity is an inborn right, something that people are brought into the world with. Nothing in this planet can undermine our opportunity, deny us from our privileges. As notice previously, our privilege of opportunity should never make hurt some other individual, legitimately or in a roundabout way. We should regard opportunity as everybody on the planet/society has it, on the off chance that you need others to regard your opportunity, initially you should figure out how to regard them. Furthermore, following this ways, we can appreciate and carry on with our opportunity through our life. Last however not the least, I need to cite a sentence that my instructor in secondary school used to state Quanto mais liberdade, mais responsabilidade., it implies the more opportunity you have, the more obligations you face. All things considered, this sentence is extremely intelligent and I trust that that individuals out there have understand this little mystery!

As he continued to research Christianity’s claims as well as his very own claims, he wasRead MoreWhat Is Priori Research And Present Era1507 Words   |  7 Pageshas been declared in the year 1960 as a golden age. Racism, a short story Essays

Racism, a short story Essays Racism, a short story Essay Racism, a short story Essay Racism, a short storywhich will forever haunt me on my ill-fated childhood. I try to pay no heed to the physical beating but more to the emotional distress I was unjustly forced upon. The colour of my skin alienated me from my students; as a result of this I had no friends, no one to look up to or even to care for. It was the time when I needed it the most, the foundation of my upbringing which would steer me on the righteous road to adulthood. My first and only school report read: A hard worker. Malkir is a determined student with a passion to succeed. He has built up an encouraging reputation and we are glad to accept him as a new member of our school community. Something so simple made me feel so good. My dad smiled, looked at me and said he was proud. It sounds silly but I had butterflies in the pit of my stomach. I hadnt felt this good since I won the spelling test in primary school. My parents always said that I was special and everyone would value me for who I am, like Allah does, but evidently life doesnt happen that way. Who is this God I worship? I devote my life, praying to my faith, all for this! Last Thursday it got to the point of no return. When I came home with a scratch from my forehead to my lower neck my parents said, I dont want you to let anyone hurt you anymore.Stupid, stupid religion. Where is God when I need him the most? I had been in the toilets for about fifteen minutes now trying to get Jamies voice out of my head, but to no avail. The words echoed and imprisoned my autonomy. Oh Ill get you boy you can be sure of that, Ill get you. On the brink of collapsing, I whispered Allahu Akbar. I could now feel my parents circulating me, as if their strength were my silhouette, a nebulous barrier without substance. As I felt this sense of security, I cautiously strolled to the lunch hall. I wasnt even hungry; I just used it as a way to extricate my thoughts from reality. As the bell rang for the beginning of the fourth per iod I ran through the Lonsdale corridor in hope I could evade the year elevens who refer to me as the the terrorist or Bin Laden. Some would see this as a false hope as I will have to go all the way around the gym where they will be smoking their cigarettes. I covered my eyes with the whole of my palm, please G..ggod.-He has asked me why but to be honest, I dont really know myself; its just a sort of ego boost. He has done nothing to merit what the lads and I do to him, well apart from him being black, and to be honest that is suffice to beat him up. He is one of the few black kids in the school thankfully. Cos hes in our year we can just get away with saying it was a fight and not racism. Notihng would happen anyway, everyone hates black people. I dont really believe in karma, well, if it were true, Im sure I would be a cripple by now. There was one time where I truly believe we all overstepped the mark. He was swiftly jogging past the gym, for once it looked like he had a purpose, but it was most likely just to avoid us. We were all drinking, it was a Thursday and it was Adrians turn to get the vodka. I felt slightly dizzy but I was probably able to come to my senses for next lesson. Jay on the other hand was completely wrecked. He walked, or should I say stumbled over to the black kid only to find him breaking down in tears holding his new phone out saying just take it, I cant handle this anymore. I thought this was slightly exaggerating; we would have probably pushed him about, thats all. The whole group laughed, apart from me. I felt some form of remorse; it was though I could feel my ego sadistically thrashing against my stomach lining. It was like butterflies but the sensation wasnt a reassuring one, trust me.His rigid body lay there innocently as a constant reminder of what just happened. Although the attack wasnt anything more severe than the others, we just all seemed to know something was wrong. In this cataclysm our senses seemed to enhance. It was then an awkward silence, to say the least, broke out and everyone could vividly feel the gentle breeze of the wind brush their cheek. The colossal surroundings were as still as a flower but enclosed us on the scene. Not a single word passed, we all stood there impassive and in denial about the travesty that emerged out of nowhere. It took about four minutes for the punctual ambulance to arrive. The fusion of chaotic sirens and blue lights added to the pandemonium. It was then we all knew, even a professional couldnt hold back that poignant face of despondency. Putting it in terms we can relate with, the doctors compared the likes of Mals death to that of Anne Franks. People without the will to live seem to fade away at the most optimistic of times He just gave up on life. Immediately the thought of my dead brother erupted into my head and was so indomitable I wasnt able to think about anything else. A shadow of shame engulfed me internally. Im not a murderer, I didnt do it my conscie nce whispered but screamed at the same time I broke down, please G..ggod.Malkir Sudah, may Allah bless over you and rain down his love from the kingdom of paradise. Although you were wrongly taken from this world, we hope its to a better place. You were of paramount importance to this family Mal, and there is an eerie silence in your absence. We will continue to obey and follow in the footsteps of the virtuous prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him. Gods love was flourished into every being of mankind, including that of the boys who stole your life. Allahu Akbar.

Economic and Monetary Union in Europe Assignment

Economic and Monetary Union in Europe - Assignment Example When the concept of European Union was initially proposed, people thought it as a simple regional cooperation to exploit the possibilities of globalization. The concept of Economic and Monitory Union (EMU) in Europe was discussed earlier, but it failed to materialize because of various reasons. â€Å"The immediate impulse that led to the relaunch of EMU in the late 1980s was in the prospect of the completion of the Single Market†. â€Å"On December 10, 1991, at the Maastricht summit, the member states of the European Communities adopted the treaty on European Union. It amends and extends the 1957 treaty of Rome which established the European Economic Community†. This paper analyses the economic and monitory unions in Europe. The economic and monitory union (EMU) in Europe was established in 1999. The EMU has two components; an exchange rate union, and complete convertibility. Moreover, there are a number of alternative sets of monetary arrangements that are in theory co nsistent with monetary union such as currency union, exchange rate union, free inter-circulation union, parallel currency union etc. The necessities of a single currency in the integration process forced EU to think in terms of a single currency under the control of EU rather than the individual member countries. EU is responsible for determining the exchange rates, interest rate and other monitory polices. Individual countries do not have the authority to print more currencies or Euros than prescribed by the EU.

Of Mice and men Essay Memories? Yeah, Ive had plenty, seen men come an go on this ranch, so many I cant hardly remember them, but two stick in my mind like it was only yesterday, but must be near on twenty years ago oh Im Slim, I lead the mule team, sure does beat busting a gut bucking barley now where was I? Yeah, thats right these two guys Came in one Friday, Boss was sure mad cos they were late. Youve never seen such an odd pair George, he was small, neat, quick witted but Lennie, my was he huge! Funny thing was his name was Small! He was like a great bear and he wasnt too clever either. Funny how he and George strung along together. Anyway, they come in Friday, Boss had been given us hell all mornin! I was out on the fields when they came out. Candy was with them and seemed to be showing them around the barn. Lennie seemed excited bout somethin. George came over and introduced them, Hi, Im George and this big fella here is Lennie. Lennie then tried whispered something to George but I heard every word, George, George, ask him bout dem dogs, please George? George looked a bit embarrassed. Candy tells us you got some new born pups. If theres one goin spare, you reckon Lennie could have it? George asked. Yeah sure you can Lennie, I said Come by the barn later and you can pick one out. He went all shy, with a smile from ear to ear, almost like a little kid. Lennie came down to the barn after he had finshed buckin, he sure was on hell of a worker, and he picked out his Pup. I tried to explain that he shouldnt be taken out of the box , but the big bastard didnt take no notice of it, ha, gawd he must have been the stupidest guy I have ever met. Now where was I oh right, so Lennie had got his Pup an it must have been dusk so we all headed back to the bunkhouse, and little did we know how much was gonna happen that night. We sorry my throats a lil dry, could ya pour us a drink? Cheers. Ah, thats better. Anyway, me and George were headed back to the bunkhouse and I started talkin to George bout Lennie, He sure is some worker, aint he? I mean when you said he were a good worker, I thought you meant he just didnt complain, but by golly, he must have beat every bucker on the ranch, with one hand! George chuckled. If only he wasnt so stupid I could be livin a dream. He said and looked in to the stars. So, how come you travel with him, I mean I aint never seen no-one that looks out for anyone as much as you look out for him. He looked a lil taken back by that but he simply answered, I promised his aunt I would look after him, an by god Ive had too. But he will do anything I tell him too, George started to smile, I once told him too jump in a river, and I knew he couldnt swim but he still did it and nearly drowned cos o me. Ever since then I havent done anything to him that might hurt him. He stared into the ground, almost as if he regretted doin that to him. I broke the silence, So, how come youve ended up here? I asked. He didnt want to tell me, I could tell by his face, but I think he new that he could trust me. You wont tell no-one, will ya? He asked Course I wont I replied Well He started off, We were working in weed, and Lennie was settin under some trees havin a break cos we had finished our morning load in an hour and a half. He smiled with a great sense of pride, Then one of the bosss daughters came over and started talkin to him, and the stupid bastard ended up touchin her dress and the dumbass didnt let go. The daughter ended up shoutin Rape, rape! everyone looked over and saw a girl strugglin with a guys hands all over her. I literally had to smack the big guy to get him off her. We then had to run for a lives. We ended up squatin in a river in some reeds. They went straight past us an never saw us, but there still after us. Luckily I think thats about 100 miles away, thank god. He sighed with relief. Lennie then brought this puppy into the bunkhouse, George, George look at da puppy, Slim gave it to me. George turned aroun and went psycho at him, Lennie, you dumb bastard! You gotta leave the pup in the box with its mum other wise your gonna kill im! Do you wanna kill him? Do ya? Lennie cowered away into the corner. Of course not George. Ill put him back straight away now, He ran out, an nearly hit his head on the top door, ha. Candy then cam in the bunkhouse. He was an old guy, busted his arm and had to stay there, or so he said. He came in with his dog, which wouldnt be so bad, but the old thing stank. Carlson, one of the buckers, offered Candy an option, You should shoot that old dog, Candy. I mean hes no good to any of us. Candy looked at his dog, I couldnt shoot him, Candy said, Ive had him since he was a pup Why dont I shoot him then? Carlson asked, Ye, Ill take him out to the forest and jus shoot him in the back of his head. He wont feel a thing, I swear. Your probably puttin him through more torture keepin him alive than shootin him. A tear was wellin up in Candy. This pup was his only friend. Candy relented and Carlson took the dog and you then heard a shot in the distance. We all looked at Candy, he was starin at the wall. I offered him a new puppy but he didnt answer. Crooks, the niggah entered and told me tha Lennie was messin with the pups. George looked at me and told me to kick him out if hes causin trouble. I went off and made sure he werent doin nothin stupid. Well stupid even for him. I was in the stables, makin sure all the pups were alrigh after Lennie had been messin with em, when Curley came stormin in, shoutin something bout his wife. I didnt want notin to do with it so I went to the bunkhouse but he kept on about how his wife is always sneakin off without his permission, and how he suspected me of havin an affair with his bitch. Ha, if I ever had an affair, it would be with Marilyn Monroe rather than that tart. I went into the bunkhouse and he still wouldnt let it drop so I said to him, Curley, I would never even think about touchin your bitch, cos I dont like that type of tart. All then men a fallin bout laughin and joined in with havin a lil dig at Curley. Sadly though, Lennie was smiling about something, he was in his own lil world, but Curley saw him an thought he was laughin at him. What are you laughin bout you yellow bellied bastard? Curley was squarein up to him and Lennie didnt know what to do. You bastard! Curley smashed the poor fella round the face and knocked him over. Lennie just stood up and did nothing bout it. He looked at George and was screamin at him to make Curley stop. I knew George didnt want no trouble so he kept quiet, but Curley was smashin Lennies head in. Then suddenly George screamed, Get im Lennie! Get im! Then Lennie switched, he grabbed Curleys hand and just squeezed, looked as if he was killin the bastard. George was smackin im tellin im to let go but he wouldnt budge. Lennie had im about 2 ft off the ground. We had to pull the big fella off of Curley. I went over to see Curleys hand and Lennie had jus disintegrated the bone, twas jus skin, not a bone in it. I knew that George and Lennie would get their asss busted for this so I thought Id have a heart to heart wit Curley, I said, If this gets out, Lennies gonna get canned for it. But your reputation as a tough guy will be ruined as well. Now if you say your hand was caught in a machine, then we will say that too, but if you dont, we will ruin your reputation til nobodys gonna be scared o you, you got that? He nodded his head, whilst screamin, and I told the guys to take him to doctors fast. That, thank God, was the end of that night. The next day, notin too much happened. We went into town and Candy, Crooks and Lennie stayed at the ranch. Thankfully that was all that happen that day. Next day was the horseshoe tournament. I never used to be that good at them, but they sure were good fun. Crooks did tell me that Lennie was looking at his pup, but not doin anthin to harm em. We had jus finished the tournament and George went to get som water. He came back, but didnt look to good. I was jus gonna ask him if hes alrigh but then Candy came out of the stables waving his arms bout screamin that somthin had happened to Curleys wife. We all went to see what was wrong, and it werent a pretty site. She was layin on the hay, at first ya thought she were sleepin, but then ya noticed her neck was bent in a bad way. Curley didnt look much sad, more angry then shouted, Im gonna kill the son o a bitch! Everyone started to get agitated and some people started shoutin, Lets get im, and Ill go get ma gun! George had gone real pale and Curley said to im, Your gonna stick wit me, so I don think you were involved, alrigh? George nodded. Curley told Crooks to get all the horses ready, seemed like it were a search party. Well it was but not the usual search party, it was more o a search an kill sorta party. Me, Curley, Carlson and George headed south whilst the others headed west, jus in case. I knew George knew where Lennie was, an we strayed away from Curley and co.. We ended up near this river and George said hell go in alone. I stood by some trees an saw everythin that happened. George went up to Lennie, pulled out Carlsons luger and told Lennie to look out toward the horizon. Lennie was smiling talkin to himself I think, George looked hesitant but found som courage and pulled the trigger. Lennie fell down the bank, and jus lay there. George walked over and didnt look to good. Curley and Carlson came over, makin up som story to tell the others. But I knew that George didnt wanna have to shoot Lennie, so I went and had a chat wit him. I simply said, It had to be done. He looked at me, and seemed glad that someone had said that to him, but still looked troubled. We got back to the ranch an everyone wanted to know what happened. Carlson was leading the story, and half of werent even real. The next couple o days was hard on George. He seemed to be in a completely different world, starin into space. He did get over it though, took him a couple o weeks, and he turned back to the ol George. God, that weekend was the longest weekend I have ever had.

Views on the role of Nick as a narrator in the Great Gatsby have Essay

Views on the role of Nick as a narrator in the Great Gatsby have varied greatly. How do the views of Arthur Mizener and Gary J. Scrimgeour relate to your own view of Nick's function in the novel? Published in 1925, and written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, 'The Great Gatsby' is a brilliant and scathing illustration of life among the new rich during the 1920s; people who had recently amassed a great deal of wealth but had no corresponding social connections, or a sense of morality. Nick Carraway is the narrator of the novel; he rents a house on Long Island next door to Jay Gatsby, the title character. Gatsby is in love with Nick's cousin Daisy, who is married to an obnoxious man she does not really love, and he has no strong feelings towards her either. Her and his extramarital affairs are set against the background of the extravagant parties that Gatsby is famous for throwing, while Nick struggles to reconcile his attraction to a lavish lifestyle with his feeling that a moral grounding is missing. The writing style throughout 'The Great Gatsby' is terse and the book at times is depressing, with an overall message of hope and the American dream, discouraging. The story is told through the eyes of an active, biased, participant. Nick Carraway has a special place in this novel and has many functions. He is not just one character among several, it is through his eyes and ears that we form our opinions of the other characters. Nick is both within, yet outside the occurrence of events as he is friends with Gatsby and related to Daisy, but is still not involved fully in all that occurs, even though somebody else often tells him about it. Often, readers of this novel confuse Nick's stance towards those characters a... ...atsby is Nick's opinion. Gatsby's dream and the purity of his vision is the 'great' part, rather than the wealth. In one sense, the title of the novel is ironic; the title character is neither "great" nor named Gatsby. He is a criminal whose real name is James Gatz, and the life he has created for himself is an illusion. By the same token, the title of the novel refers to the theatrical skill with which Gatsby makes this illusion seem real. Fitzgerald has created a most interesting character in Nick because he is very much a fallible storyteller. When an author unsettles an accepted convention in the art of storytelling by creating a narrator like Nick, it draws attention to the story as fiction. Ironically, in doing this, he has created in Nick a figure that more closely resembles an average human being and thus has heightened the realism of the novel.

Are minorities continually being unfairly arrested, tried and punished as a result of racial discrimination or do minorities just commit more crimes? In order to determine if disparity or discrimination is the cause of current over representation of minorities in the criminal justice system we have to study race, ethnicity and past discriminatory judicial practices. Are the historical discriminatory practices and past laws the cause of the systematic imbalance of power in relation to race, class and discrimination within our society that leads to more crime among minorities today? There are many theories on why, how and even if race discrimination plays a significant role in explaining the current arrest and incarceration rates of minorities in the United States. Social strain theory, because it also involves the most restriction to important social aspects of society is the one I most agree with. In my experience restricted access to social and cultural capital is the cause for higher than expected crime rates among our citizens who lack these two important aspects of crime control. The inability to achieve success based on societies’ definition causes stain and alternative ways of thinking to achieve that level of success, which is sometimes outside the confines of the law. The term race has traditionally referred to the biological differences of mankind. The differences that distinguish us by the color of our skin, hair texture and certain physical features determine what race we are. Some experts contend that race is just a social construct and people are classified and labeled by the culturally dominant group in that society. This type of classification system tends to imply that one race is inferior to another (Walker et al pg 6). The term minority is used for any race that is less in numbers than the race in power. Currently in the United States the â€Å"majority† is considered to be Caucasian and the â€Å"minorities† are African Americans, Hispanics, Arab Americans, etc. There have been many historical examples of minorities being unfairly treated within the confines of our judicial system. â€Å"Race discrimination and social and economical inequality have a direct impact on crime and criminal justice† (Walker et al, pg 78). In the southern states during the 1800’s barriers were created in the laws to separate nonwhite persons from the majority, white persons called the Black Codes. These codes created a legal line of separation stating where blacks could and could not go in public, what land they could own and how they could earn a living. The term, Color Line encompassed everything involving what water fountains and bathrooms â€Å"coloreds† could use and where they could stand or sit in public spaces. The Jim Crow laws of the 1900 were also racist laws and actions that deprived African Americans civil rights, claiming blacks were inferior to the whites and were lower class people. â€Å"The colored sign was the most visible mark of inferiority imposed upon African Americans by the Jim Crow laws† (Davis PhD). The punishment for breaking these laws and codes were mob lynching, serving prison time on chain gangs and debilitating debt imposed by sharecropping attempts to make a living (Davis PhD). Previous laws and codes set the stage for economic inequality of minorities in the United States. Income, wealth, unemployment are the standard measure of economic inequality. â€Å"All of these measures indicate deep and persistent inequality in society generally and with respect to race and ethnicity† (Walker et al pg, 79). In order to determine if race discrimination has the major contributor to minority over representation in the criminal justice system we must rule out the idea of disparity being the cause of overrepresentation. The concept of disparity in the criminal justice system refers to differences in say incarceration rates of a certain race but not because of systematic race discrimination. Disparity is a way to explain the high numbers of minorities as criminal perpetrators with legitimate factors. These factors could include, minorities commit more crimes, not because police officers, judges and juries are racists. Crime arrest and convictions could be solely based on legal factors. These legal factors include the seriousness of offense, mitigating circumstances and previous criminal records. These factors opposed to extralegal factors that include race, class, gender and lifestyle (Walker et al, pg 18). If arrest and conviction rates were based solely on legal factors with no weight given to extralegal factors, a high minority count would be considered disparity not systematic discrimination on part of the criminal justice system. To determine if only legal factors and not extralegal factors are the cause of an overrepresentation of minorities in the criminal justice system much more research needs to be conducted. If the cause of high incarceration rates is because of disparity instead of discrimination there is one theory I feel explains why there is disparity. The Social Strain Theory explains the causes of disparity among minorities that leads to higher rates of arrests and incarceration rates. â€Å"Robert Merton’s social stain theory holds that each society has a dominant set of values and goals along with acceptable means of achieving them† (Walker et al, pg 92). If success in life is measured by your social status, involving what you own, where you live and who you know then that is your personal goals for success. The ways to achieve this success are seen as hard work, education, self-control and as individual achievements (Walker et al, pg 92). If the American dream is not realized by a group of people because of societies inability to provide equal levels of educational and work opportunities to achieve success it results in what Merton’s calls social strain. Merton’s theory of social strain addresses the gap between what society views as success and a persons circumstances are for trying to achieve that success. (Walker et al, pg 92). Social strain helps to explain high rates of criminal activity among minorities because minorities are more likely to be denied legal opportunities to obtain the American dream by legal means. â€Å"The high levels of economic inequality experienced by minorities, together with continuing discrimination based on race and ethnicity, mean that minorities are far less likely to be able to achieve approved social goals through conventional means† (Walker et al, pg 93). In conclusion I believe minorities do commit more crimes today, but that is because of a history of discrimination and blocked opportunities to achieve social and cultural capital. The ruling class, the majority, because of past-institutionalized and systematic discrimination has created what we have today, a disparity among minorities involved in our criminal justice system. Therefore even though we have curbed contextual and individual acts of discrimination we have yet to address past discrimination in a meaningful way while still upholding the law. Is Banning Tobacco a Good Idea

Is Banning Tobacco a Good Idea? As smoking is reported to be one of the main causes of cancer, governments all over the world are trying to find a sure-fire way to discourage people from smoking. Some of them consider outlawing the sale and the consumption of tobacco, like it was done with heroine. But is it actually a promising measure? Firstly, it is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of the aforementioned measures in the fight against heroine. Judging by frequent news reports about the incessant hunt after drug dealers, heroine sale and, consequently, consumption are flourishing despite the prohibition. The saying ‘The forbidden fruit is sweet’ has been characteristic of human nature since ancient times. It especially concerns teenagers, who are prone to question the existing order of things. The danger of being arrested only adds more attractiveness to smoking. If we intend to encourage people to give up smoking, we had better use an approach that would make people utterly disgusted by smoking. I believe that education is one of the ways to address this problem. Many people would argue that smokers are well aware of the dangers since they have been lectured about it hundreds of times. Dry facts can hardly convince anyone, but ‘seeing is believing’. One anti-smoking campaign will sti ck in my memory forever – nobody was teaching us why smoking is wrong, but near the entrance to the university there was a photo exhibition showing the effects it had on us. Needless to say, even the most inveterate smokers felt really uncomfortable on seeing them. All in all, prohibition policy hasn’t shown itself to advantage, so it is not worth introducing it if we want to do away with smoking. It is more advisable to focus on education and finding other effective ways to address the problem.
